Frequently Asked Questions

What is hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy uses hypnosis, which is an altered state of consciousness, to help clients make positive changes in their lives.

I use scripts to take you through a guided relaxation – all you have to do is sit, relax and listen to the sound of my voice. The unconscious mind takes in all the suggestions it needs, and then uses them to help you make the changes in your life that you want.

How does hypnotherapy work?

It is thought that our mind consists of 2 parts – the conscious and the unconscious or subconscious.  We use our conscious mind everyday while we’re awake, making decisions, thinking, etc. The unconscious mind is the part that contains all of our life experiences and memories.  Imagine it like a big bubbling cauldron with a lid. While we are awake, there’s a person with a hammer (acts like a censor), who keeps the lid shut, only allowing certain things in or out.  When we go to sleep, so does that person, and so the lid can open.  This allows thoughts and feelings from the unconscious to surface as dreams. Hypnosis works in a similar way. Instead of sending the person with the hammer to sleep, hypnosis distracts him, allowing positive suggestions to enter straight into the cauldron without being censored or stopped.  These positive suggestions are what is needed for you to make the changes you want to, to improve your life.

What does hypnosis feel like?

In a word, lovely! It’s like a very deep state of relaxation. You are comfortable, safe, aware and completely in control.

Is it like sleeping?

No.  It’s a very deep state of relaxation which is similar to sleep, but not the same. While you are under hypnosis, you will be aware of everything that’s happening to you, you’ll be able to hear my voice and the noises around you. Some people find that as they get more relaxed their mind drifts – they can still hear what’s going on, but they’re not concentrating on my voice anymore. This is completely normal.

What if I don’t come out of it?

That won’t happen! You are in control during the therapy, so whenever you want to, you can come out of it.

Can I be made to do things I don’t want to?

No.  Even if I wanted to (and trust me, I don’t) I could never make you do anything against your will – your unconscious mind just wouldn’t accept it, and would dismiss or ignore it.  For the same reason, if you come to me for hypnotherapy for something you don’t really want to change (e.g. you come to stop smoking, but you don’t really want to) it won’t work.

What can hypnotherapy help me with?

As long as it is something that you truly want to change, hypnotherapy can help you with almost anything from stopping smoking, building confidence, losing weight etc.  There is a list of issues that I treat on my ‘about’ page. If you have an issue that is not on the list, but would like to know if hypnotherapy can help, or would like to know more about the treatment of a particular issue, just give me a call, or send me an e-mail and I’ll see if I can help you!

Are there any side effects?

Apart from the changes related to your therapy (e.g. you don’t want a cigarette!), sometimes, after coming out of the hypnosis, you may feel a little tired, but this feeling usually goes after a few minutes. I’ve found that a lot of people feel energised later in the day after their therapy session.

Can anyone be hypnotised?

Yes, although some people find it more difficult to enter into hypnosis because they find it difficult to relax or because they’re sceptical about the treatment. It may also be more difficult for someone intoxicated with alcohol or drugs, and I would be unwilling to treat anybody who arrived for an appointment in such a condition.

Am I in control?

Yes – all the time.  If you feel at all unsafe or uncomfortable during the session, you can bring yourself out of the hypnosis whenever you want.

How long does it take?

I offer 60-minute sessions, which may include a brief discussion of your issues. This allows me to tailor the therapy to your needs to make it more effective.
